Families in Transition

The McKinney–Vento Homeless Assistance Act guarantees a free and appropriate public education for all children and youth experiencing homelessness. B.E.C. 42 U.S.C. 11431 outlines procedures for deciding school placement, enrolling students, and determining responsibility. Federal and state laws make our responsibility clear.

Families In Transition: Youth and families that may be experiencing difficulties in securing appropriate and permanent housing. This may include, but not limited to, living in a shelter, transitional housing, motel, vehicle, campground, on the street, or doubled up with relatives or friends due to a lack of housing.

Unaccompanied Youth: Students experiencing homelessness who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.

Federal Education Definition of Homelessness:  Individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.
